John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah

19 Now this was John's testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.

세례 요한의 증언

19 유대인들이 예루살렘에서 제사장들과 레위인들을 요한에게 보내어 그가 누구냐고 물었다.

20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”

20 그는 자신이 그리스도가 아님을 분명히 고백했다.

21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”

21 그들이 그에게 묻자, “그럼 당신은 누구입니까? 엘리야입니까?”

He said, “I am not.”

그가 대답했다. “나는 아니다.”

“Are you the Prophet?”

“그러면 그 선지자입니까?”

He answered, “No.”

그가 대답했다. “아니다.”

22 Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

22 마지막으로 그들이 말했다. “그럼 당신은 누구입니까? 우리가 보낸 사람들에게 무엇이라고 말할 수 있겠습니까? 당신에 대해 무엇이라 말합니까?”

23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”

23 요한은 이사야 선지자의 말을 인용하여 대답했다. “나는 광야에서 외치는 자의 소리, ‘주님의 길을 곧게 하라’고 말하는 자이다.”
